Fairport Matmen Win Three Straight

The Fairport wrestling team picked up three straight wins last week defeating Pittsford 42-25 and Eastridge 33-25 in league matches and then beat Victor 39-15 in a non-league contest. Aaron Rowe (125), Kyle Tellex (140), and Justin Gavin (160) each earned victories in all three matches.

Coach Craig Kaper’s team came out strong against the Panthers.

Mike Fuqua (112) went right to work against Matt Wukovitz. He scored the first takedown and put Wukovitz on his back and stuck the pin at 1:43.

The Red Raiders then got some momentum by winning four weight classes in a row. Rowe stepped on the mat against Tim Karutz and put him away with a pin in just 1:17.

Matt Cunningham (130) started strong against Rob Mizelle. He scored the first three takedowns to jump out to a 7-1 lead but Mizelle fought back. Cunningham refused to give in and held on for a close 11-10 decision.

Brian Bowen (135) fought hard and scored two takedowns against John Clark to earn a 5-2 decision.

Tellex stretched the Fairport lead to 24-12 with a strong third period to put away Tony Tortorici with a pin at 5:25.

Steve Hassett (152) took on Brian Richardson. Hassett controlled the match and put Richardson on his back and stuck another pin for the Red Raiders at 3:47.

Gavin put the match away for Fairport when he pinned Brian Haring at 3:32 to give the Red Raiders a 36-16 lead.

The matmen took on Eastridge at Victor in a Monroe County East match. Phil Accorso (103) put the Red Raiders on the board scoring a 6-0 decision against Mike Wood in the opening bout.

Rowe came out strong again against Ryan Sharpe and stuck his second pin of the week just before time expired in the second period at 3:58 to give the Red Raiders a lead they would never give up.

Freshman Dan Safranec (130) stepped in for his first varsity match against Joel Stecura. Safranec started aggressively and scored the first takedown. He stayed on the attack and scored a reversal in the third period to secure his first varsity win with a 7-4 decision.

With the Red Raiders up 27-13 Joe Fingler (171) took on Mike Casserino. Both wrestlers fought evenly through the first period but Fingler gained control with the takedown. He stayed on the attack with two more takedowns and a reversal on the way to a 12-2 major decision that clinched the match for Fairport.

The 33-25 win put the Red Raiders in third place with a 4-3 mark in the Monroe County East.

The matmen then took on host Victor and dominated right from the start and never trailed in the match. Fuqua scored three takedowns to earn a 9-2 decision against Kyle Gilbride to put Fairport up 9-0.

Rowe then led a charge as the Red Raiders won the next eight weight classes. He scored three takedowns in a 7-1 decision.

Cunningham stepped in against Ian Summerville and scored the only takedown in a hard fought 3-1 decision.

Bowen controlled Ryan Porter scoring three takedowns and rode him throughout the match in a 6-0 shutout.

Brian Baniewicz (145) did the same thing against Joe Krajacic in another 6-0 win. Baniewicz kept his opponent from gaining any advantage and controlled the match.

Hassett went on the attack in the first period against Josh Constantino. He scored three takedowns and went on to a 9-2 decision to give the Red Raiders an insurmountable 30-3 lead.

Gavin hooked up with Chris Rodas in a very tight match. Both wrestlers battled evenly through a scoreless first period. Gavin then scored what would be the only takedown in the match and rode Rodas through the third period to earn a hard fought 2-1 decision.

Fingler made very short work of Ernie Every hitting a double leg takedown off the opening whistle and immediately put Every on his back and stuck the pin in just 14 seconds for the fourth fastest pin in school history.

The 39-15 win gives the Red Raiders three wins in a row to improve their record at 5-4.
