Fairport Wrestling Teams Cap Season with Awards

The Fairport Wrestling Team capped its season last Sunday at its annual awards and recognition banquet before one of the biggest turnouts ever.

Coach Craig Kaper honored the varsity team for their hard work and successful season. Senior Kyle Tellex was honored with the team Red Raider Award. He led the team in points in dual meets and earned All-League honors for a third time. Junior Aaron Rowe was given the team Spark Plug Award, and senior Steve McElvain was recognized with the Pete Logan Award for his hard work and dedication.

Joe Fingler earned the Most Outstanding Performance of the Year when he won in overtime, wrestling up a weight class, to qualify for the Super Sectionals. He also recorded the fastest pin of the year in just fourteen seconds against Victor. Brian Baniewicz was given the Key Match Award for his win against the defending Class B champ from Palmyra-Macedon. Phil Accorso had the Most Exciting Match of the Year when he won in overtime at the Clayton Barnard Tournament.

Other individual awards went Ryan Kelly for the Most Takedowns for the year in his match against East Rochester. Ryan Good earned the Best JV Performance of the Year by winning the JV County Tournament. Dan Rowe received the Best Sophomore Performance of the Year for finishing second at the JV Counties, and Nick Seaman was given the Best Freshman Performance of the Year for finishing fourth at the JV County Tournament. Dan Safranec earned the Practice Wrestler of the Year, and Brian Bowen won the Coaches Award for his third place finish at the Campbell-Savona Tournament.

Phil Accorso and Joe Fingler earned All-County honors this season at the Monroe County Tournament. Accorso was also named to the second team All-League. Tellex, Fingler, and Mike Fuqua earned All-League Honorable Mention.

Seniors Kyle Tellex and Steve McElvain were also honored for their efforts in the Fairport Wrestling Program over the past six years.

Coach Kaper announced junior Brian Baniewicz and sophomore Joe Fingler were chosen captains for the second year to lead next year’s team.

Coach Gary Dawes honored the JV wrestling team for an outstanding season. The team finished second in the Monroe County Tournament behind only Spencerport, and finished as a team in the top three in four of the five tournaments they competed in. Ryan Good, Dan Rowe, Aaron Semler, Nick Seaman, Justin Cunningham, Dan Safranec, and Nick Ryan earned All-County honors at the JV County Tournament. Ryan Good was given the Most Outstanding JV Wrestler. He won the JV Counties and placed first or second in every tournament this year, winning three times. Dan Rowe earned the Most Improved JV Wrestler.

Coach Mike Barker recognized the Johanna Perrin Modified Wrestling Team for their efforts this season. Eighth graders Kevin Maeder and Mike Reynolds were honored with the Coaches Award. Eighth graders Kyle Joyce and Joel Matthews were the Most Improved Wrestlers. Eighth grader Joe Sykes was recognized with the Junior Gable Award.

Coach Ed Porto honored the Martha Brown Modified Wrestling Team for its hard work this year. Greg Smith and Matt Gunio were recognized with the 8th Grade Coaches Award. Joe Mancuso received the 7th Grade Coaches Award. Jack Hereford earned the Most Improved 7th Grade Wrestler and Jeff Gashlin was the Most Improved 8th Grade Wrestler. Mike McGinn was honored with the Junior Gable Award.
