Fairport Wrestlers Compete at Super Sectionals

Joe Fingler and Phil Accorso represented Fairport at the Section V Super Sectional Wrestling Tournament last weekend. This tournament brings together the top four wrestlers in Class A, B, C, and D to determine the Section V representative for the New York State Championships.

Fingler, a sophomore, and Accorso, an eighth grader, gained valuable experience competing in their first Super Sectional tournament.

Fingler had three tough matches against two sectional champions and a runner-up.

He fell behind in his opening match against the Class B champion John Geitner (Attica) but tried to fight back in the third period. Just after the whistle Fingler was able to sit out and worked to reverse his position. Geitner was able to reverse Fingler but Fingler refused to give up and reversed Geitner again with just forty seconds left, but it wasn’t enough as he dropped a tough 12-4 decision.

In the consolation round Fingler bounced back and dominated the Class D runner-up Amsey Remchuk (Avoca). He jumped out to a 2-0 with a takedown in the first period. He nearly ended the match in the second period when he worked Remchuk to his back to score two near-falls for a 7-0 advantage. Fingler put the match away with another near-fall in the final period to earn a 10-0 major decision.

In his next match Fingler took on the Class C champ Willie Jones (Cal-Mum). He couldn’t overcome Jones’ size and strength advantage but he took him the distance in a hard fought 13-5 decision.

Accorso took on a sectional champ and two runner-ups in challenging match-ups.

He faced the Class B champ Dan Showman (Wayne) in the opening round. Accorso battled Showman evenly in a scoreless first period and almost landed the first takedown as time ran out at the end of the period. He couldn’t overcome Showman’s strength advantage and dropped an 8-0 decision.

Accorso fought back in his next match against the Class D runner-up Kelly Quinlan (Canisteo). He shot and scored a single-leg takedown with just eighteen seconds left in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Accorso stretched his lead in the second period when he hit a switch to score a reversal then rode Quinlan hard for the last half of the period and the entire third period to earn a well deserved 4-0 decision.

He then stepped in against J.P. Zingerle (Gates-Chili) the Class A runner-up. Accorso defeated Zingerle in overtime at the East-West Day dual meet against Gates-Chili but Zingerle took control in this rematch. He scored the takedown in the first period but Accorso worked to break free and trailed 2-1. Zingerle scored another takedown in the second period to extend his lead to 4-1. Accorso kept attacking in the third period but couldn’t find an opening and came up just short in a hard fought 6-1 decision.

Coach Craig Kaper will look to Fingler and Accorso to lead juniors Aaron Rowe, Steve Hassett, Brian Baniewicz (captain), Matt Cunningham, Justin Cunningham, and Ryan Kelly, along with sophomores Mike Fuqua, John LaClair, Brian Bowen, Ian Ammons, and Justin Gavin to fill the holes left by the two seniors, Kyle Tellex (captain) and Steve McElvain and lead the Red Raiders back through the Monroe County East and Class A Sectionals next season.
