Fairport Wrestlers Earn All-County Honors

Two young Fairport restlers sophomore Joe Fingler (171) and eighth grader Phil Accorso (103) earned All-County honors for the first time by finishing fifth at the Monroe County Wrestling Tournament last weekend.

Fingler was seeded fifth and came out strong in his opening match against Brandon Taccone (Olympia). He scored a singl-leg takedown and worked Taccone to his back for a near-fall in the first period. In the second period Fingler put Taccone on his back two more times to build a 10-0 lead on the way to a 13-0 superior decision.

Fingler dropped a tough decision in the quarterfinal round but bounced back in the consolation round against Jeremy Frohm (ER). After a scoreless first period Frohm escaped to take a 1-0 in the second period. Fingler fought back to tie the match with an escape in the third period then scored the only takedown with a minute to go and held on for a hard fought 3-2 win.

Fingler took on Billy Stewart (Penfield) in the next round and again wrestled a strong match. He escaped in the second period and then score a takedown for a 3-0 lead. Stewart reversed Fingler in the third period but then Fingler hit a switch and reversed Stewart to secure a 5-2 decision.

In his final match against Rick Bonczek (RH) Fingler scored the takedown and put Bonczek on his back in the second period before ending the match with a pin at 3:34 to finish fifth.

Accorso was also seeded fifth. He dropped a close opening match in the quarterfinals but dominated his next match against Kevin Hadcock (Olympia). He scored three takedowns and three near-falls and ended the match with a technical fall at 3:45.

Accorso took on Brett Thompson (Irondequoit) in his next match. He scored a double leg takedown in the second period to take the lead then reversed Thompson in the third period and stuck the pin at 4:30 to advance.

After dropping a tough 2-0 decision, Accorso took on Andrew Whitbeck (ER). He fell behind 3-0 but fought back with an escape and takedown then worked Whitbeck to his back to take a 5-3 lead. He held off Whitbeck in the third period for a 6-3 decision to finish fifth.

Aaron Rowe (125), Brian Bowen (135), Kyle Tellex (140), Ian Ammons (145) and Justin Gavin (160) each two wins for the Red Raiders.

Rowe scored four takedowns and fought to get off his back in a hard fought 8-7 decision and scored four takedowns again and two near-falls in a dominating 13-4 major decision.

Bowen earned an 11-2 major decision with three takedowns and a near-fall and won 8-3 in the consolation round.

Tellex scored an impressive 9-1 major decision in the opening round with four takedowns and earned a 5-1 decision in the consolation quarterfinals.

Ammons scored a pin at 2:27 then dominated his next match with four takedowns and three near-falls scoring a technical fall at 3:00.

Gavin won his opening match 7-3 with a strong second period and then earned a 5-1 decision in the consolation round.

Mike Fuqua stuck a pin in 1:32 and Steve Hassett scored four takedowns in an 11-8 decision for impressive wins.

The Fairport matmen host Pittsford on Wednesday February 2 in a Monroe County East match. The Red Raiders take on Eastridge and Victor this Saturday.
