Red Raiders Matmen Outduel ER

The Fairport Wrestling Team hosted East Rochester in a key Monroe County East match and came out on top 28-16.

The Red Raiders Phil Accorso (103) took on Andrew Whitbeck in the opening match. After a scoreless first period Accorso took a 1-0 lead in the second on a penalty point. Midway through the third period he hit a switch and reversed Whitbeck that led to a big 3-0 decision.

Mike Fuqua (112) and John LaClair (119) wrestled hard but dropped 3-2 and 9-7 decisions in very close matches.

Aaron Rowe (125) stepped on the mat against Greg Mousso and scored the first takedown. Rowe took a 2-1 lead into the third after a scoreless second period and came on strong. He escaped then shot back and scored a takedown to stretch his lead to 5-1. After Mousso escaped, Rowe put the match away with another takedown to earn a 7-2 decision that tied the match 6-6.

Matt Cunningham (130) fought to avoid getting pin then nearly pinned Shane Sallerson but fell in an exciting match.

Brian Bowen (135) and Steve Cragg battled evenly through two scoreless periods. Neither wrestler could find an opening until Bowen worked to escape with under a minute to go in the match to earn a tough 1-0 decision.

Kyle Tellex (140) tried to fight off the flu but couldn’t overcome Rick Essom in a close 5-2 match.

Ian Ammons (145) came out in an exciting match against Josh Couture. Ammons dominated the first period with a takedown and three near falls to take an 8-0 lead. In the second period he reversed Couture and put him on his back again to build a 12-1 lead. Ammons put the match away with another takedown and near-fall in the third for a big 16-2 superior decision to give the Red Raiders a 14-13 lead.

Steve Hassett (152) took on a very tough Josh Leonard for the Bombers. Hassett came back with a takedown in the second period to tie the match but Leonard worked to escape. Hassett escaped to tie it again in the third period and send the match into overtime but Leonard was able to score the takedown for a hard fought 5-3 decision.

The Red Raiders then went on a run that decided the match. Justin Gavin (160) started slow against Ray Lore but came on strong in the third period. After two scoreless periods Gavin reversed Lore and put him on his back twice for a key 8-0 major decision that put Fairport up 18-16.

Steve McElvain (171) stepped on the mat against Brett Pierson and scored a double-leg takedown in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Pierson escaped in the second but neither wrestler could find an opening. Both wrestlers battled evenly in the third period and McElvain held on in another close match for a 2-1 decision.

Joe Fingler (189) wrestled up a weight class against Jeremy Frohm. Fingler shot and scored a single leg takedown in the first period to take the lead. After a scoreless second period Fingler escaped then scored another takedown to control and clinch the match for the Red Raiders with a 5-1 decision.

Ryan Kelly (215) came out strong against Louis Andres. Kelly went right to work and scored the first takedown and put Andres on his back. Andres worked to escape but Kelly scored another takedown to build a 6-1 lead. In the second period Kelly scored two more takedowns to stretch the lead to 10-3. He put the match away in the third with another takedown and near-fall for a big 15-6 major decision to give Fairport the 28-16 victory.

The Fairport Wrestling Team travels to Webster this weekend for the Monroe County Tournament. Wrestling begins at 4 p.m. on Friday and continues at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
